PNG records five new COVID-19 cases and one death – total cases at 17,524

Papua New Guinea has recorded five new COVID-19 cases as well as one death on Monday 19 July, increasing the total number of cases to 17,524.

All five cases were recorded in four provinces: two in the National Capital District and one each in Simbu, East New Britain and New Ireland provinces.

The known COVID-19 death was reported in the Madang province. This now increases the country’s death toll to 192.

All five new cases are males. Their ages range from 27 to 58 years. Two of the new cases were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing and two had underlying medical conditions. Two of the new cases had contact with confirmed COVID-19 cases.

To date, a total of 143,569 people have tested for COVID-19. Of the total confirmed cases to date 17,173 have recovered with 159 cases considered active within the last 21-day period.

All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases.

As of 18 July, a total of 68,830 people in PNG have been vaccinated. This includes 8,327 health workers, 47,721 essential workers and 12,782 people with comorbidities or existing medical conditions.
