Niue Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi has announced his new Cabinet ministerial portfolios a week after being elected and sworn in as Prime Minister.

The new Cabinet appointments were announced Tuesday as the government set out its priorities across finance, foreign affairs, infrastructure, climate change, health and education.

Prime Minister Tagelagi will retain responsibility for Cabinet and national security, the Niue Assembly, public service, finance and economic growth, foreign affairs, crown law, state-owned enterprises, oceans and fisheries, and climate change.

His portfolio also covers Treasury, customs, taxation, investment, trade, planning, the Niue Trust Fund and public-private partnerships.

Richie Mautama takes charge of Home Affairs, including village councils, pensions and welfare, women, youth and children, sports, NGOs and faith-based organisations.

He will also oversee the Niue Police, corrections, national disaster management and the Ministry of Infrastructure, including transport, airport operations, utilities, telecommunications and broadcasting.

Mautama has also been appointed Associate Minister for the Ministry of Finance and Economic Growth.

Rhonda Tiakia will oversee Justice, Lands and Survey, the Meteorological Service, Environment and Agriculture.

Her responsibilities include biodiversity, waste management, conservation, invasive species, forestry, biosecurity and food security.

She has also been appointed Associate Minister for Home Affairs, Taoga Niue, Tourism and Climate Change.

Kahealani Hekau takes responsibility for Health, Education, Taoga Niue and Tourism.

Her education portfolio includes early childhood, primary and secondary education, as well as tertiary education through the University of the South Pacific.

Hekau will also serve as Associate Minister for Justice, Lands and Survey, Foreign Affairs and parts of the infrastructure portfolio, including transport, airport services and utilities.

The appointments were announced by the Government of Niue on 20 May following Tagelagi’s re-election as Prime Minister on 13 May.
