The Government of Nauru has directed all government officials and state-owned enterprises to strictly observe the One-China Principle in all official communications, engagements and government activities.

In a statement issued following a Cabinet decision on 15 May 2026, the government said all personnel representing Nauru locally and overseas must ensure consistency in terminology and conduct relating to China and Taiwan.

The directive applies across all government departments, statutory authorities, state-owned enterprises, government-controlled entities and affiliated bodies.

The government said officials must avoid using “terminology, symbols, flags, emblems, or representations which are inconsistent with the One-China Principle.”

Nauru reaffirmed that diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China resumed in January 2024 “based on mutual respect and recognition of the One-China Principle.”

Under the directive, all official communication relating to Taiwan must align with Nauru’s diplomatic position.

“All official communication relating to the Taiwan Province of China must comply with the diplomatic position of the Government of Nauru,” the statement said.

The government also instructed officials not to engage in official relations or arrangements with Taiwan authorities or participate in programs funded by Taiwan.

“Officials must not enter into official relations and arrangements with the Taiwan Province authorities or participate in programs funded by the Taiwan Province.”

The statement also reminded all government officials and state-owned enterprises to fully comply with Nauru’s policy on the One-China Principle.
