The Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting is scheduled to commence this week in Suva.
Key agenda items include the review of the regional architecture and the Forum’s partnership mechanisms, progress of the 2050 Strategy, climate change initiatives, and regional security.
PACNEWS understands that the Forum Troika, comprising Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown, and incoming Forum Chair and Tongan Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, will also meet this week to discuss the high-level mission to New Caledonia.
Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders have endorsed a high-level mission to New Caledonia in response to the request from New Caledonia to support a long-lasting resolution to the ongoing political situation. However, this mission depends on France approving the Forum’s request to visit New Caledonia.
If Paris grants the request for a fact-finding mission, Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will lead the high-level mission as the incoming chair of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG).
The Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting will be held on Friday 09 August 2024.
