Tuvalu is preparing to host Pacific and international leaders for a pre-COP event in October, with Climate Change Minister Dr Maina Talia saying the level of interest has exceeded the country’s expectations.
Talia said preparations were continuing to bring global leaders to Tuvalu so they could see firsthand the impacts of climate change facing one of the world’s lowest-lying nations.
“We continue to do the work to ensure that we get the global leaders to come,” Talia told Journalists at a press conference in Palau on the sidelines of the Forum Leaders meeting in Koror.
He said Tuvalu had initially expected between three and five global leaders to attend but had received a stronger response than anticipated.
“We were only expecting at least three or five, but it went over our expectations,” he said.
Talia said all Pacific Island countries had confirmed their participation, along with six global leaders.
“We are glad that we have the opportunity to showcase on behalf of the Pacific,” he said.
The visit will allow international leaders to see firsthand the challenges confronting Tuvalu and other low-lying Pacific Island countries as the region continues to push for stronger global action to keep the 1.5-degree target within reach.
