The Fiji Government has welcomed the Pacific Islands Forum’s decision for Fiji to host the Pre-COP31 Meeting in October 2026, with a Leaders’ component in Tuvalu and a dedicated climate event in Palau as part of the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting.

This is a defining moment for the Blue Pacific. It places our region at the centre of global climate diplomacy ahead of COP31 in Türkiye and reflects the confidence of Pacific Leaders in Fiji’s experience and leadership on climate action.

The Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka reiterates that the Pre-COP will serve as a strategic platform to align Pacific priorities and sharpen our collective voice on the issues that matter most: keeping 1.5°C within reach, unlocking accessible and predictable climate finance, strengthening resilience for Small Island Developing States, and advancing the ocean-climate nexus.

“Hosting Pre-COP31 is not symbolic. It is strategic. The Pacific is stepping forward to shape ambition, demand accountability, and drive outcomes that reflect the urgency we live with every day,” the Prime Minister said.

The Pre-COP gathering will build momentum from the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting and act as a bridge to the negotiations and Leaders’ Summit at COP31. Fiji will work closely with Pacific partners to ensure that the priorities of climate-vulnerable nations are clearly reflected in global decisions.

For Fiji, this responsibility is both an honour and a commitment to action. The Pre-COP will showcase practical and implementation-focused solutions reflecting how vulnerable nations are dealing with the everyday impacts.

“The Pacific will come to Pre-COP31 united, and outcome focused. We are ready to collaborate with all partners to ensure COP31 delivers measurable progress for our people and for future generations,” the Prime Minister added.

Fiji acknowledges the support of regional and international partners as preparations begin. Together, we will ensure that Pre-COP31 delivers clear political direction and renewed global momentum toward an ambitious and action-driven COP31.

Fiji looks forward to welcoming Pacific leaders, global partners, and stakeholders to our shores in October 2026 as we work collectively to ensure a strong and impactful Pacific presence at COP31 and drive meaningful progress on the global climate agenda.
