Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has signaled his intention to step down, acknowledging that he is prepared to resign on the floor of Parliament if he no longer commands majority support.
Speaking at a press conference in Honiara Wednesday, Manele said he intends to deliver a formal statement before tendering his resignation, should the numbers in Parliament not be in his favour.
“If the numbers are not on my side, then I will resign after presenting my statement,” he said.
“However, I would like the debate to proceed.”
The motion of no confidence scheduled today will mark the third such challenge against Manele since taking office, underscoring the mounting political pressure on his leadership.
Despite the uncertainty, the Prime Minister affirmed that he is ready to face the motion.
He also noted that the handling of parliamentary proceedings now rests with the Speaker, who holds the authority to determine how the process unfolds.
Responding to questions about whether he is satisfied that all options have been exhausted, Manele emphasised that Solomon Islands remains a democratic nation, and that his government has acted within established democratic processes throughout.
The Prime Minister also apologised to the nation for delays caused by the situation and called for calm and unity as political leaders prepare to convene for today’s decisive session.
