Dr Michael, in his address, highlighted the cultural, ecological, and economic importance of Fiji’s ocean, noting that the expedition represents a milestone in evidence-based ocean management.

“For us in Fiji, the ocean is not just around us — it is within us. It carries the stories and lifeblood of our ancestors, shaping our identity as a maritime people and sustaining our communities for generations.”
He acknowledged the traditional custodians and iQoliqoli owners whose blessings and stewardship made the expedition possible and commended the collaboration of partners that brought this historic scientific work to life.

“To care for our most precious resources, we must first understand them. This unprecedented expedition gives us the scientific foundation to make informed, equitable, and effective decisions for our ocean’s future.”

Dr Michael highlighted that the findings from the expedition will help guide the development of Fiji’s Marine Spatial Plan, operationalise key elements of Fiji’s National Ocean Policy, and support the implementation of Fiji’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.
He also reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to sustainably manage 100% of its ocean and protect at least 30% by 2030, underscoring the Coalition Government’s vision of a resilient Blue Economy.

“These findings reinforce our determination to sustainably manage our ocean and protect it for the prosperity of future generations.

This is a proud moment for our nation — a reminder of the deep responsibility we carry to leave behind an environment worthy of our children’s inheritance.”
