To strengthen Vanuatu’s efforts in global climate advocacy, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Matai Seremaiah Nawalu, has appointed Ralph Regenvanu as the nation’s Special Envoy for Climate Change and Environment.

The appointment, made under Section 29 of the Foreign Service Act No. 20 of 2013, assigns Regenvanu with a pivotal role in advancing Vanuatu’s climate and environmental agenda on the global stage.

As Special Envoy, Regenvanu will play a crucial part in supporting the government’s efforts to secure an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a key initiative aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change on vulnerable nations like Vanuatu.

“With your expertise and global network, your role will also include assisting the Government drive key climate and environment initiatives, including negotiating access to critical climate finance,” Minister Nawalu stated in the official appointment letter.

The mandate also extends to representing Vanuatu across various international platforms, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS), as well as at COP meetings and other global forums.

The appointment, effective from 20 August 2024, will last for one year with the possibility of extension, according to the provisions of the Foreign Service Act.

Regenvanu’s responsibilities include holding expansive discussions and negotiations on behalf of Vanuatu, reflecting the nation’s commitment to securing a sustainable future in the face of climate challenges.

Regenvanu, who stepped down as Vanuatu’s Minister for Climate Change Adaptation just a week ago, expressed his gratitude and readiness to continue his work in the climate space.

“I am honoured to have been appointed as Vanuatu’s Special Envoy for Climate Change and Environment. I look forward to continuing the important advocacy work in this space,” Regenvanu said on social media X following the announcement.
