The Marshall Islands continues the second of three major meetings on the status of Pacific Women and gender work in the region.
Delegations from around the Pacific completed the 15th triennial conference and within hours were listening to words of welcome and support at the welcome reception for the Ministerial and Women Leaders events, which will close off the week of discussions on the challenges facing gender equality and social inclusion work in the Pacific.
Welcoming officials ahead of their opening plenary in Majuro Forum SG Baron Waqa noted the convergence of the two significant gatherings: the Pacific Islands Forum Women Leaders Meeting and the Pacific Ministers for Women Meeting, saying it was a privilege to be at the occasion.
“Women’s leadership is integral to achieving the vision and goals of the 2050 Strategy. By empowering women and girls and ensuring their full participation in decision-making processes, we are strengthening the resilience of our communities,” he said.
He said supporting diversity for Pacific women and girls will “bring unique perspectives, innovative solutions, and an unparalleled commitment to the well-being of our societies. This is crucial in addressing the complex challenges we face, from climate change to health issues to economic inequality.”
“In the face of adversity, the resilience of Pacific women and girls shines brightly. We have witnessed this resilience in the aftermath of disasters, in the fight for gender equality, and in the relentless pursuit of a stronger, resilient region.”
SG Waqa thanked leaders for their commitment to the shared goals on gender equality.
“This evening, we honour that resilience and must pledge to continue to support and elevate women leaders across our region. We acknowledge that leadership by women and girls, at all levels, is what is needed. Whether it is in Parliament, in boardrooms, school rooms, or in community halls – leadership by women and girls is powerful because they reflect their own experiences and those of their communities.”
President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, President Hilda Heine, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Feleti Teo, Vice President of Palau, Uduch Sengebau Senior and Vice President of French Polynesia, Minarii Galenon-Taupua heard from other lead speakers at the welcome reception, including RMI Minister for Women Jess Gasper Jr and Cook Islands Minister for Women and Internal Affairs, Vainetutai Rose Brown.
