The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is seeking to maintain its observer status in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), with the possibility of pursuing associate membership as it looks to strengthen its voice in the region.
Clement “CJ” Bermudes Jr, special adviser to the governor for economic issues, said CNMI’s participation at the recent PIF Leaders Meeting in Koror, Palau, provided an opportunity to raise the Commonwealth’s concerns with Pacific leaders despite its current observer status.
“We’re certainly committed to maintaining our observer status and potentially even elevating to associate member status as we continue to participate in forums like the PIF,” Bermudes told Marianas Press.
The CNMI currently holds observer status in the PIF, while Guam and American Samoa are associate members.
Bermudes said the Commonwealth also had an opportunity to participate in regional discussions through the Pacific Islands Conference of Leaders (PICL), held at the start of the PIF Leaders Meeting.
Unlike its status in the PIF, the CNMI is a full member of PICL, which is hosted by the East-West Centre
He said participation in both regional forums was important as Pacific island jurisdictions seek to ensure their interests are represented amid growing geopolitical competition in the region.
The push for a stronger role comes as Pacific leaders continue to emphasise regional unity and greater participation in regional decision-making.
