Tonga’s Minister for Tourism and Infrastructure Semisi Sika has attended his final Cabinet meeting before leaving government following the Court of Appeal decision that upheld the cancellation of his Tongatapu 2 parliamentary election victory.
In a statement shared last Friday,Sika said he submitted his resignation ahead of his official removal from Parliament on 03 August, allowing time for a smooth handover of his ministerial responsibilities to his successor.
Sika said his final Cabinet session was marked by an emotional farewell from His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, who approached him after the meeting and offered the words, “’Ofa atu” — an expression of goodwill and affection.
He described the moment as a deeply meaningful conclusion to his political service.
The Ministry of Infrastructure also held a farewell gathering for Sika, thanking him for his leadership during his time as Minister.
Sika’s departure follows the Court of Appeal’s dismissal of his appeal against a Supreme Court ruling that declared his Tongatapu 2 election void.
The court found breaches of electoral expense rules, including failing to properly declare a contribution linked to Suliana Dance Academy and exceeding the legal campaign spending limit of TOP$20,000(US$8,322).
The courts found no allegation of bribery in the case. The decision means a by-election will be required for the Tongatapu 2 constituency.
Sika, a long-serving politician who has previously served as Deputy Prime Minister and held ministerial portfolios, thanked supporters and reflected on his years of public service.
The Electoral Commission is expected to oversee the process for selecting a new representative for Tongatapu 2, while Sika’s resignation brings his current Cabinet role to an end.
