The Solomon Islands Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) has continued consultations with the Prime Minister’s Office Legislative and Policy Cabinet Sub-Committee as it moves to fast-track legislative reforms.
The second consultation held this week is part of efforts to advance the Ministry’s legislative agenda in line with the GREAT Coalition Government’s policy priorities.
The reforms are aimed at modernising the Ministry’s legal and policy frameworks, strengthening institutional systems, and improving the country’s capacity to address climate change, environmental management, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
Sub-Committee Chairman Francis Waleanisia said progress was being made.
“I am pleased with the outcomes of today’s meeting. We are making steady progress towards achieving the GREAT Coalition Government’s key policy objectives,” Waleanisia said.
“While there is still much work to be done, it is clear that changing circumstances require significant improvements to our legislative framework, enforcement and monitoring systems, disaster preparedness, and implementation arrangements.”
Waleanisia said climate change remained one of the most pressing challenges facing Solomon Islands, particularly for vulnerable low-lying coastal communities.
He said strengthening the country’s legal and policy framework was essential to improve national preparedness and response, while also positioning Solomon Islands to better access international climate finance and support.
Waleanisia also commended the Ministry for its commitment to advancing its legislative reform programme.
