Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne believes missed opportunities are something they can’t afford against the All Blacks next weekend.
However, the national coach said they have another week to fix things before facing the three-time world champions.
Byrne said Fiji had some good opportunities against Georgia which they failed to execute.
“There were a couple of opportunities out wide that we didn’t take and defensively we were reasonably good but there are some things that we can improve as well I think just having a week together to go through those processes. The big thing for us is finishing off our opportunities that we create during the game and I think that’ll come after spending another week together.”
He adds the side brought a lot of energy against Georgia despite having a week together.
The Flying Fijians kicked-off their international Test with a win on the road under new coach Mick Byrne.
Fiji defeated Georgia 21-12 in the wee hours of Saturday to set-up a positive outlook for the Test against the All Blacks in the next two weeks.
Tevita Ikanivere scored Fiji’s first try from a maul while flyer Peniasi Dakuwaqa marked his debut with a double, one on each half.
Fly-half Vilimoni Botitu nailed two long range penalties.
Flanker Kitione Salawa who also made his Flying Fijians debut was at his usual best, setting up Dakuwaqa’s first try.
Also earning their first cap last night were Isiah-Armstrong Ravula and Inia Tabuavou.
“I think our defence showed that we’ve been working hard. We missed a few attacking opportunities, but I’m extremely impressed with how our team played,” Byrne shared during the post-match interview.
The match was also a special one for Reds prop Peni Ravai who played his 50th Test cap for the Flying Fijians.
“It’s been a long journey for me and my family. I’m here to help the young boys carry on with the Flying Fijians in the future. I don’t know when I will finish playing, but I’m here to pass on the knowledge to the upcoming boys,” the veteran stated.
The Flying Fijians now turn their attention to the upcoming Test match against the All Blacks on July 20 in San Diego, USA.
