The Kingdom of Tonga has officially begun its e-passport journey.
Tonga convened the inaugural Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting for the Tonga e-passport Project, a multiyear initiative aimed at modernising national legal identity systems, strengthening border security and advancing public sector digitalisation.
The meeting was chaired by Crown Prince Tupouto‘a ‘Ulukalala and brought together key government agencies, the Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Tonga and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
Discussions focused on the introduction of secure, internationally compliant electronic passports for Tongan citizens.
Funded by the Government of Japan, the project underscores a shared commitment to strengthening governance, resilience and safe, dignified mobility across the Pacific.
International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said it is proud to support Tonga in enhancing secure identity systems and facilitating global mobility for its people.
