Australia and Palau are strengthening cooperation on security, development and regional priorities as Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr visits Australia this week.
The Australian Government said the visit would build on the two countries’ longstanding partnership and shared commitment to a peaceful, secure and prosperous Pacific.
Australia also congratulated Whipps on his leadership as Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, recognising his efforts to strengthen regional unity and advance Pacific priorities internationally.
A key event during the visit will be the official opening of Palau’s Embassy in Australia, marking a milestone in bilateral relations.
Whipps and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong will also renew a development cooperation arrangement to reaffirm support for Palau’s development priorities.
The two countries are further expanding cooperation to combat transnational crime through stronger policing cooperation and support for customs and border management.
Australia is also assisting Palau in protecting and managing its coral reefs, strengthening government services, promoting gender equality and expanding skills development and scholarship opportunities.
The visit underscores both countries’ commitment to working together on shared challenges and supporting stability, security and sustainable development across the Pacific.
