Papua New Guinea Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko says PNG remains committed to supporting New Caledonia’s political journey and strengthening Melanesian solidarity within the region.

Tkatchenko made the remarks following a bilateral meeting on Monday between Prime Minister James Marape and President of New Caledonia Alcide Ponga, held during the President’s official visit to PNG.

Also present was the French Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Pierre Fournier.

“While formal diplomatic relations have been with the Republic of France since 1976, and New Caledonia as its overseas territory, our strong relations have been through common memberships in the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG),” Tkatchenko said.

“At sub-regional level we have and continue to maintain our Melanesian solidarity.”

He said Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia share deep cultural and historical ties as part of the Melanesian family.

“PNG maintains a strong commitment to the MSG and New Caledonia’s vital role within it. Our regional family is stronger together,” he said.

Tkatchenko said PNG supports New Caledonia’s political path and will work with its Government and the Republic of France to explore opportunities for the accelerated implementation of the 2018 Joint Cooperation Plan.

“Additionally, PNG respects the wishes of the people of New Caledonia and the integrity of the process agreed upon under the Nouméa Accord, and we stand ready to assist and share our experiences in nation-building and constitutional development,” he said.

Tkatchenko reaffirmed PNG’s respect for New Caledonia’s sovereignty and the nation-building process under the Bougival Agreement.

“PNG will continue to support a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future for all New Caledonians,” he said.
