Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr has called for stronger global partnerships to help Small Island Developing States (SIDS) turn their vulnerabilities into resilience, as he welcomed progress on the newly established SIDS Centre of Excellence.

“In the midst of this demanding High-Level Week, it is always a special moment when we, as SIDS leaders, friends, and global partners, can gather to reconnect and reaffirm our shared vision for the resilient prosperity of Small Island Developing States,” he said.

He pointed to the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS) as the blueprint guiding their way forward.

“Last year, we charted a bold course forward through the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS). It is a clear blueprint to the world on how SIDS intend to move from vulnerability to resilience. Today, we saw the beginnings of that vision take shape.”

Highlighting the new Centre, Whipps commended Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne for his leadership.

“This morning, we celebrated a historic milestone with the SIDS Centre of Excellence. I wish to commend my esteemed co-host, Prime Minister Browne for his steadfast leadership in bringing us to this tangible step.”

Whipps said while SIDS are committed to supporting each other, external partnerships remain vital.

“We SIDS believe in the principle of SIDS helping SIDS. At the same time, our unique challenges also require strong partnerships and continued international support. That is why we are especially grateful for partners like the PVBLIC Foundation, whose role was instrumental in the establishment of the Centre, along with the Global SIDS Data Hub.”
He told delegates the presence of international partners signalled hope.

“As Chair of AOSIS, I am proud of what we have achieved together. I am even more hopeful about the road ahead, because we are not on this journey alone. Your presence here tonight is a strong reminder of the friendships, partnerships and shared commitment that continue to support SIDS on our path to resilience.”

Whipps urged partners to strengthen cooperation and reaffirm their commitment to ensuring SIDS thrive.

“Let us use this evening to strengthen our collaboration and reaffirm our shared commitment to a future where SIDS not only survive, but truly thrive.”
