The United Bougainville Front (UBF) party will not field a presidential candidate in the 2025 Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) election, instead throwing its full support behind incumbent President Ishmael Toroama.

The announcement came in an official statement from UBF Founder and Regional Member, Peter L. Tsiamalili. Tsiamalili cited the critical need for “continuity and stability in leadership” as Bougainville advances toward independence, praising Toroama’s commitment to the region’s sovereignty goals.

“President Toroama’s leadership has been marked by a commitment to the aspirations of our people,” stated Tsiamalili.

“His vision aligns with our party’s goals of achieving a sovereign and self-sufficient Bougainville.”

The UBF highlighted Toroama’s six-point strategy, crediting it with strengthening governance, economic planning, and community engagement. The party emphasised that maintaining his leadership is vital during this pivotal phase in Bougainville’s journey.

While backing Toroama for the presidency, the UBF confirmed it will focus resources on nominating candidates at the constituency level. Tsiamalili stressed the party’s commitment to empowering local leaders who will advocate for community interests and support the broader independence agenda.

“The upcoming election is not merely a political event; it is a pivotal moment for Bougainville,” Tsiamalili urged. He called for unity against division and complacency, framing the election as an opportunity to reaffirm Bougainville’s independence path.

The UBF’s endorsement consolidates support behind Toroama, who has led the region since 2020 amid ongoing negotiations for independence from Papua New Guinea.

In closing, Tsiamalili appealed to all Bougainvilleans: “Together, we can navigate the complexities of our path to independence, ensuring we leave a legacy of resilience, strength, and unity.” .
