Niue and Tuvalu’s ability to ensure accurate trade measurements has received a major boost with the official handover of precision test weight sets from Fiji, part of a regional push to strengthen quality infrastructure across the Pacific.

“These sets will be instrumental for Metrology Inspectors in Niue and Tuvalu, enabling them to calibrate weighing scales and other equipment with precision,” said Deputy Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Esala Nayasi, during the official handover ceremony.

The equipment was donated by Fiji’s Department of National Trade Measurement and Standards, under the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Nayasi said the donation would “enhance confidence in trade transactions” by improving the accuracy of weights used in commerce.

“I acknowledge the leadership and steadfast support of the Permanent Secretary, Shaheen Ali, who continues to be an advocate for regional collaboration in advancing quality infrastructure,” he said.

The test weights will be shipped to Niue and Tuvalu with support from the EU-funded SPIRIT Project. “This support is vital for improving the accuracy of trade measurements,” Nayasi added.

The donation is part of the broader Pacific Quality Infrastructure Initiative, which is led by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat under the Pacific Aid-for-Trade Strategy. The programme focuses on building regional capability in standards, metrology, accreditation, and conformity assessment—critical tools for enabling trade and protecting consumers.

Fiji is also set to host the Pacific Regional Quality Policy Inception Workshop in May, further cementing its leadership role.

“This holistic collaboration is a testament to our ongoing efforts to build technical capacity and promote equitable access to quality infrastructure services across the Blue Pacific Continent,” Nayasi said.
