The Pacific ACP Trade Officials Meeting kicked off Wednesday with a call for action as Tonga’s Minister for Internal Affairs, Distaquaine Tu’ihalamaka, emphasised the need for continued resilience and collective effort in the region’s trade agenda.
“It’s a moment to take stock of our achievements, as well as to consider the work yet to be done in the coming year, said Minister Tu’ihalamaka.
The region has faced numerous challenges, but the Minister stressed that the resilience shown by Pacific states remains a source of inspiration. However, Tu’ihalamaka highlighted that much work remains ahead, especially in ensuring that the benefits of trade and investment are shared equitably across all Pacific nations.
“It is now more important than ever that we focus our collective energy on ensuring that the fruits of regional trade and investment are equitably shared among all our Pacific nations,” she said, calling for a collaborative approach to bridge gaps and create opportunities that leave no one behind.
Tu’ihalamaka outlined the meeting’s comprehensive agenda, which includes discussions on the Pacific Regional Integration Support Programme, a key initiative for enhancing the region’s economic integration.
She emphasised the importance of shifting the focus from policy formulation to the practical implementation of these policies to ensure they have a tangible impact on the Pacific people.
“We will also benefit from the perspectives and updates shared by each of your nations, as your unique experiences and insights are invaluable in shaping the path ahead,” she noted, stressing the value of collaboration and shared wisdom in shaping the region’s future.
One of the critical areas of focus is the ongoing negotiations surrounding the Interim-Economic Partnership Agreement(iEPA).
Tu’ihalamaka stressed the significance of these discussions in moving from policy development to concrete actions that address the region’s real needs.
“I am eager to engage in our discussions today, and I look forward to the collective wisdom and collaboration that will arise from our shared efforts,” she said.
Tu’ihalamaka also called for unity and collaboration to overcome the region’s challenges.
“It is through unity and collaboration that we will continue to rise above the challenges we face and create lasting, positive change for our people,” she said.
