Tuvalu’s Prime Minister FeletiTeo addressed the urgent issue of climate change and its impact on oceanic and coastal fisheries at the Honiara Summit Tuesday.

He emphasised that for small island nations like Tuvalu, this is a matter of survival, citing threats like coral bleaching and declining fish stocks.

Prime Minister Teo called for global action, urging the rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and proposing a compensation mechanism for vulnerable nations.

He highlighted the need for community-based fishery management and stronger fishing rights for small island states in international waters.

In his address, Prime Minister Teo called for a global response, urging collective action to tackle challenges that extend beyond national capacities, particularly regarding fisheries impacted by climate change.

He proposed several critical actions, beginning with a strong call for the rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and advocating for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

PM Teo suggested the establishment of a compensation mechanism to support small island developing states adversely affected by climate change.

He noted, “Tuvalu faces losing around 40 percent of our most important locally produced food, and a significant percentage of the access fees which are the mainstay of our government budget, due to industrial development based on fossil fuels in which we took no part in.”

Additionally, Prime Minister Teo highlighted the necessity for adaptation measures, proposing the development of community-based management for fisheries and the protection of fishing rights for small island nations in the high seas.

He explained, “In the Oceanic Fishery, under the PNA vessel day scheme, we already have a management system that allows for the trading and transfer of fishing opportunities. However, we must also establish the rights of small island developing states to access fishing opportunities in the high seas. This is both a matter of climate justice and responsible management.”

Discussions will continue throughout the summit, focusing on collaboration and innovative solutions for sustainable fisheries and ocean protection. Let’s unite for a sustainable ocean economy.
