The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) Board of Directors has terminated the appointment of Laijipa Naulivou as Director of Rugby.

While Naulivou tendered her resignation following her sexist remarks in a media interview, the Board determined that a firm stance was necessary to reinforce its commitment to upholding professional standards and safeguarding the integrity of Fiji Rugby.

Naulivou had stated that she does not condone lesbianism in our national women’s team.

She was appointed as Director of Rugby last Saturday, replacing Conway Beg.

In a statement, the Board stated that FRU categorically rejects any form of discrimination and the views expressed by Naulivou are her personal opinions and do not reflect the official position of FRU.

“Our women’s team and all players can rest assured that this will in no way impact their opportunities, representation, and continued development as integral members of Fiji Rugby.”

“FRU remains steadfast in ensuring a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment for all the Fiji Rugby Vuvale, regardless of gender, background, or identity.”

“As the governing body for rugby operations under the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust, FRU adheres to World Rugby’s principles of strong governance, ethical leadership, and fair competition. Our primary responsibility remains the development of rugby at all levels—from grassroots to the elite stage—while ensuring that all decisions reflect the best interests of the sport in Fiji.”

“FRU is now focused on ensuring a seamless transition in leadership. The Board will engage with key rugby stakeholders, including players, unions, and international partners, to ensure that all governance and operational frameworks remain strong and effective.”
A new appointment will be made in due course through a rigorous and transparent selection process.
