Palau is making preparations to host the 2025 Pacific Mini Games, scheduled from 30 June to 09 July 2025.
In an interview, Frank Kyota, President of the Palau National Olympic Committee (PNOC), outlined the country’s efforts and challenges as it gears up for the event.
Kyota confirmed that 24 countries are expected to participate in the games, competing in 12 sports. The most recent edition of the Pacific Mini Games was held in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, and Palau is now tasked with demonstrating its capabilities as a host nation.
A key part of the planning process, Kyota said, is the annual assembly meeting of the Pacific Games Council. This meeting provides an opportunity for council members to tour sports facilities and assess the readiness of the venues.
While progress is being made, Kyota acknowledged that facility upgrades remain a priority. “Upgrading our facilities is something we need to do on an annual basis,” he said, emphasizing the need for ongoing improvements.
Funding is another significant challenge. Kyota noted that while some countries, like the Marshall Islands, have recruited athletes from overseas, Palau faces obstacles in providing adequate support for its athletes. “Improving our competition level and training our athletes requires investment in better coaches and facilities,” he said.
Kyota also stressed the importance of developing young athletes. “The Mini Games are a step up from the Micro Games,” he said, highlighting the need to identify promising athletes early and provide them with support, including mental health resources.
The PNOC is actively recruiting athletes and exploring ways for them to balance their training with academic commitments. “We want athletes to have a career after their competition ends,” Kyota said.
In a statement issued by Pacific Games Council and PNOC, it announced that members of the Pacific Games Council are in Palau for the Pacific Games General Assembly last week, visiting various venues and the preparations for 2025 Mini Games.
As Palau moves forward with its plans, Kyota expressed gratitude for the support from various stakeholders. “I want to thank the parents, our leaders for providing the necessary funding, and the community for their continued support,” he said.
With preparations underway, Palau aims to not only host a successful event but also elevate its athletes on the international stage at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games.
