Tongan Minister for Trade, Dr Viliami Uasike Latu, has called for a strategic and sustainable approach to developing the kava industry, emphasising its cultural significance and economic potential at the launch of the Regional Kava Development Strategy (RKDS) this week.

“This strategy is more than just a document; it is a collective vision, a roadmap that reflects our shared commitment to harnessing the full potential of kava,” Dr Latu said during the launch on the fringes of the Forum Leaders Meeting in Nuku’alofa.

“Kava is a symbol of our heritage and tradition, a product that connects us not only to our ancestors but also to one another across the Pacific.”

Dr Latu stressed the need for a unified approach to capitalise on kava’s growing global demand while ensuring sustainability and equitable access.

“We must approach kava and its development with a strategic mindset—one that ensures sustainability, quality, and equitable access for all stakeholders,” he stressed.

Dr Latu highlighted kava’s deep cultural roots, stating that its significance extends beyond economics.

“Kava, a word originating from the Tongan language, is generously gifted to the broader Pacific region as a symbol that binds our communities together,” he explained.

“This shared term reminds us that kava is not just a commodity but a sacred tradition that honors peace, unity, and respect.”

The RKDS aims to standardise the quality of kava across the region, enhance market access, and promote sustainable practices.

“It seeks to ensure that the economic benefits of kava reach even the most remote farming communities, while preserving the resources that future generations will depend on,” Dr Latu added.

Dr Latu linked the strategy to Tonga’s broader development goals, noting its alignment with the Ministry’s Corporate Plan and the Kingdom of Tonga Sustainable Development Plan II.

“Our focus on building the productive capacity of local businesses, particularly through support for local producers and exporters, is pivotal for the kava industry,” he said.

“We are fostering a collaborative environment that supports economic growth and the sustainable development of the kava industry.”

He emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in driving the strategy forward.

“Through closer and more effective collaboration, we are creating an enabling business environment that is conducive to inclusive, sustainable, and resilient economic growth,” he said.

Dr Latu also extended his gratitude to all stakeholders involved in developing the strategy.

“Your dedication and collaboration have been instrumental in shaping a future where kava can thrive both as a cultural treasure and a cornerstone of our regional economy.

“This launch marks the beginning of a new chapter for kava, where tradition meets innovation, and our united efforts lead to shared prosperity for all Pacific nations,” Dr Latu said.
