Pacific delegates are among the international community at the 2nd Part of the 29th session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) currently happening in Kingston, Jamaica.
The second part of the 29th annual session of the ISA Council is, according to many participants, a key meeting for the future of deep-sea mining.
The Council continue negotiations on the draft regulations on the basis of the consolidated text and hold thematic discussions on clusters of identified issues.
Office of The Pacific Ocean Commissioner(OPOC) representative Logovaka Simmons is following the negotiations in Kingston.
“I am honoured to follow key discussions and also recognise that the Pacific is in attendance at the 29th Council session of the International Seabed Authority,” said Simmons.
She had an insightful meeting with Akuila Tawake, Chief of CARMU at the ISA, and a seasoned specialist formerly from the Pacific Community.
They discussed the crucial role of ISA in sustainable ocean governance under UNCLOS – Part XI and the 1994 Agreement.
“I’m grateful for the depth of discussions and the Pacific representation through member countries and observers in Jamaica and recognising the synergies with BBNJ and our Blue Pacific Ocean,” she said.
