The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has confirmed it has received police investigation files on former Fiji’s prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama, former attorney general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and suspended police commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho.

The investigation file also includes that of former Criminal Investigations Department (CID) director Mesake Waqa.

A statement from the DPP stated that it received the police docket involving the four on 17 February 2023.

It said the police docket was being reviewed at present according to standard ODPP procedures.

“Once a police docket is received, a DPP officer is allocated the file and has 21 days to complete a legal analysis, which is then submitted to his/her manager for review,” the DPP said.

“The manager then has a further seven days to review the legal opinion and make recommendations to the DPP who then makes a decision on what charges, if any, are to be laid.

“Alternatively, the police docket may be returned to the police for further investigation before again being submitted to the DPP for final decision.”

Bainimarama, Sayed Khaiyum and Qiliho are being investigated on allegations of abuse of office.
