Papua New Guinea will take a major step towards climate leadership with a climate investment summit on 08 December during the PNG Investment Week (PNGIW25) at Sydney’s International Convention Centre.

Climate scientist Professor Tim Flannery leads the programme with a keynote address.

“I am honoured to announce that I will be delivering the keynote at the inaugural PNG climate investment summit,” he said.

“Having known and worked in PNG for over 45 years, this carries special meaning for me, and this opportunity is a great honour.

“My address speaks to my belief that PNG’s rich natural resources, biodiversity, and resilient communities give it a promising and sustainable future.

“Throughout my career, I have witnessed the ingenuity and determination of PNG’s people, and I believe this summit is a decisive moment – showcasing how international investment, harnessed by PNG’s own innovators and communities, can unlock climate solutions not just for PNG, but for the region and the planet.”

Speakers from Australia, the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, Bank of PNG, and KPMG will join PNG regulators and experts to offer insights on finance innovation, regulatory trends, and the real potential for sustainable growth as well as look at active investment case studies in areas as diverse as mangrove conservation, circular waste management, and resilient infrastructure.

Highlighting the importance of this event, PNG Chamber of Resources and Energy president Anthony Smaré said: “Climate investment isn’t just a global agenda-it is at the heart of PNG’s development priorities.

“By hosting the Climate Investment Summit during PNGIW25, we are putting climate investment as a core investment priority for PNG, alongside our other traditional economic pillars for investment.

“We are also putting PNG on the map as a regional hub for innovation, finance, and action.

“I encourage all stakeholders – whether you are shaping policy in government, driving change in business, or delivering solutions on the ground in PNG, Australia, or the Pacific – to join this summit and drive forward the climate agenda together,” he said.
