Tuvalu’s Permanent secretary for Foreign Affairs, Pasuna Tuaga, has called for Pacific nations to stay united and innovative in tackling the region’s challenges as he officially opened the 55th Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA) in Tonga on Monday.
Tuaga, who now chairs the CRGA, said the meeting comes at a crucial time for the Pacific Community (SPC) and the region as a whole.
“We gather at a critical time. Climate impacts, economic fragility, and shifting global dynamics remind us that business as usual is not an option. We must continue to be bold, collaborative, and innovative in shaping solutions that improve the lives of our people,” Tuaga told delegates.
He thanked the Government and people of the Kingdom of Tonga for their hospitality and acknowledged the outgoing Chair, Tokelau, for its leadership over the past year.
“It is a privilege for us to gather here in Nuku‘alofa and experience the generosity and hospitality that Tonga is known for,” Tuaga said.
“Tuvalu is deeply honoured to chair the 55th Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations. This week, we meet as one Pacific family to reflect on our shared journey and commitment to a resilient and thriving Blue Pacific. As a region, our strength is in our unity.”
Tuaga also paid tribute to the Pacific Community’s 78-year legacy as a cornerstone of regional cooperation.
“For 78 years, the Pacific Community has been a pillar of regional cooperation — providing trusted scientific and technical support to advance our priorities and support our needs. This legacy continues to strengthen our collective resolve,” he said.
The Tuvalu official urged delegates to uphold the spirit of “unity through diversity,” emphasising respect for the distinct priorities of each member while working together as a single Blue Pacific Continent.
“As we move forward, let us be guided by the principle of unity through diversity — respecting the unique priorities of each member while standing together as one Blue Pacific Continent,” Tuaga said.
He also acknowledged the leadership of SPC Director-General Dr Stuart Minchin, whose term is coming to an end.
“This being his final CRGA as Director-General, and on behalf of the membership I acknowledge his service, dedication and stellar leadership during some of the most challenging times for the region and the organisation,” Tuaga said.
He further commended SPC staff for their continued commitment to advancing the work of the organisation.
“To the SPC staff, we thank you for your service and continued commitment in the works that you do,” he said.
Tuaga encouraged delegates to use the week not only to discuss policy but also to strengthen the personal and professional ties that underpin regional cooperation.
“Distinguished delegates, we have important discussions ahead with a busy week ahead of us. However, outside this room, I encourage you to connect and strengthen the bonds that define us as a Pacific family,” he said.
He also urged participants to uphold SPC’s core values of unity, care, stewardship, and generosity.
“Let us conduct our work in the spirit of SPC’s values — unity, care, stewardship and generosity,” Tuaga said as he declared the meeting officially open.
