Forum Leaders have agreed to ramp up efforts to secure greater economic returns from the region’s fisheries while backing a new regional declaration on kava.
“In relation to fisheries development in the region, Leaders commended the ongoing efforts to enhance market access for regional fisheries products, including through initiatives such as Pacific Islands Tuna, and committed to strengthen and enhance the region’s ability to develop and participate in value chain production, to increase the region’s economic returns from fisheries,” the communiqué stated.
Leaders acknowledged the U.S Tuna Treaty annual Economic Assistance Agreement payment of US$60 million for 2024 to the Forum Fisheries Agency and “supported renewed and continuous engagement with the U.S to facilitate the annual payment for 2025.”
They also welcomed updates on aquaculture development across the region.
On kava, Leaders endorsed its dual cultural and economic value, agreeing on the need for a unified approach to its recognition and trade.
“Leaders acknowledged the significance of a regional Declaration on Kava, recognising its Pacific origins, associated traditional knowledge, and cultural heritage as a symbol of identity and collective pride, while affirming its economic potential as a shared regional asset,” the communiqué said.
The Forum Secretariat has been tasked to conduct further consultations to align members around the declaration ahead of its formal consideration at the 2026 Leaders’ Meeting.
