The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat has signed a Host Agreement with the Solomon Islands Government to formalise the hosting of the third edition of the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup in Honiara in December 2024.

In his remarks, the Director General of the MSG Secretariat, Leonard Louma, acknowledged the Government of the Solomon Islands for its role in hosting, saying this is a significant event whose importance should not be underestimated.

He commented that the result of the Pacific Games show that the Melanesian teams did very well going into the finals and such tournaments prepare our teams to be able to successfully compete with other teams in the region.

DG Louma said that apart from this, there is a development aspect of sports that many downplay however if sporting events are arranged in a way that it will be utilised for development purposes, Governments will view sports in a different light altogether.

“Instead of being seen as a social expenditure, it could be looked at as an expenditure on something that could draw in funding and economic benefits to the country which is why sports development is very important,” he said.

“We regard this tournament as our primordial sports event because of the way people respond to football with so much energy and passion, hence removing barriers and unifying the people of Melanesia.

“Our mandate is to promote cooperation and what better way to do it than through sports, and if football is the sport that draws the largest crowd in the region, then that’s where our focus will be,” DG Louma added.

On behalf of the Solomon Islands Government, Supervising Permanent Secretary, Home Affairs, Stanley Wale said today signifies a crucial milestone for the Solomon Islands as we embark on the journey to host the MSG PMs Cup in December.

“This tournament which has evolved from its inclination as the Melanesian Cup transcends the realm of sports. It’s a celebration of our collective unity, culture and vibrant spirit that defines Melanesia.

“We are indeed privileged to carry the mantle as the current champions and we look forward to showcasing our world class sporting facilities.

“Sports are integral to our lives as it unites us, enhances our identity and creates avenues for employment and shared pride. The MSG PMs Cup embodies these principles,” PS Wale stated.
