Tonga is hastily preparing to host the Pacific Forum Leaders Meeting, with hundreds of visitors expected to attend.
With hotels in the capital fully booked, Nuku’alofa residents are being asked to open their homes to visitors, and shipping containers are being assembled to provide temporary accommodation.
Over 100 container homes are under construction by the government, and many private homes are renovating.
“Busy, that’s the atmosphere in Tonga … everyone is looking for handyman and plumbers,” said ABC correspondent Marian Kupu.
“As we draw closer to the Forum, the number of delegations and those not directly involved have increased, there are new names and countries that have shown interest in participating in the Forum.
“The container homes have been set in four sites … three sites have been completed and one is a work in progress,” she said.
