The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day 2026 and recognising the important contribution of women media workers across the Pacific.

This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” reminds us that when we give women respect, equal opportunity and protection, we gain stronger journalism and stronger media organisations.

Women journalists in our region are playing a vital role in shaping stories that matter. While representation has improved in recent years, many women in Pacific media still face serious challenges. More than half report experiencing abuse or harassment at work, including online attacks and sexual harassment. Some continue to face unequal pay, limited opportunities, and restrictions on assignments such as sports or political reporting, despite being equally capable.

Despite these barriers, women journalists continue to lead important coverage, especially on gender-based violence and issues affecting families and communities.

PINA acknowledges Pacific-led initiatives such as Women in Media Fiji and similar networks in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Tonga, which provide safe spaces, mentoring and professional support for women in media.

Women in Media has been on PINA’s regional agenda since 2022 at the Pacific Media Summit in Solomon Islands and Niue in 2024. It will remain a key discussion point at the 8th Pacific Media Summit in Savusavu, Fiji, in September 2026.

PINA President Kalafi Moala said women in media are essential to the future of journalism in the Pacific.

“When we give women equal space, respect and protection in our newsrooms, we gain stronger storytelling, stronger institutions and stronger communities. Supporting women in media is not optional — it is essential for the future of our region.”

On this International Women’s Day, PINA calls on media employers and male colleagues across the Pacific to treat women with respect and fairness, and to ensure safe and supportive workplaces for all journalists.

When we give women in media the space and support, they deserve, our entire Pacific region gains.

Happy International Women’s Day to all women media workers across the Pacific!.
