The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is deeply saddened by the passing of Pesi Siale Fonua, founder, publisher, and editor of Matangi Tonga, who passed away on Sunday at Vaiola Hospital in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.
Pesi Fonua was a trailblazer in Tongan and Pacific journalism — a fearless advocate for independent media and a respected voice committed to speaking truth to power. Through Matangi Tonga and Vava’u Press, he helped establish one of the first independently owned media organisations in Tonga, and later pioneered online news communication from the Kingdom, connecting Tonga to the region and the world.
PINA President Kalafi Moala paid tribute to Fonua, describing him as “more than a respected journalist — he was a courageous voice and a master storyteller who consistently informed Tonga, the Pacific, and the wider world about the realities and stories of his homeland.”
“Together with his wife, Mary, Pesi built a trusted and enduring media platform that has served the people of Tonga with integrity for decades — a legacy that continues to inspire journalists and communicators across the Pacific,” Moala said.
On behalf of the PINA Board and members across the region, Moala conveyed the Association’s deepest sympathies and love to Mary, Lano, Finau, and the Fonua family, praying for God’s comfort and strength during this difficult time.
“May he rest in eternal peace. The Pacific media community mourns the loss of one of its most steadfast champions,” Moala added.
Background
Matangi Tonga was founded by Pesi and Mary Fonua in the 1980s under Vava’u Press Ltd, becoming Tonga’s first independent news magazine. It later evolved into one of the Pacific’s earliest and most respected online news platforms, serving as a reliable source of Tongan and regional news.
Pesi Fonua was a long-standing supporter and member of the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA), contributing to regional dialogue on media freedom, ethics, and professional standards. His vision and leadership helped strengthen the foundations of Pacific journalism, particularly in promoting independent and community-based media.
