The Pacific Islands Forum’s Deputy Secretary General Esala Nayasi has praised Solomon Islands for its leadership ahead of the 54th Forum Leaders Meeting, calling the gathering a “decisive moment” for the region.

“Let me begin by congratulating you, Prime Minister, your Government and the People of Solomon Islands for your unwavering commitment and leadership in hosting this year’s Forum,” Nayasi said at the official launch of the Forum’s theme and logo in Honiara last week.

This year’s theme — “Iumi Tugeda: Act Now for an Integrated Blue Pacific Continent” — was described by Nayasi as “powerful, timely, and deeply rooted in our Pacific values of unity, solidarity, and collective action.”

Nayasi said the upcoming summit will be more than a routine gathering.

“It is a decisive moment for our region – a chance to take stock, reaffirm our unity, and most importantly, to act,” he said.

He signalled that major issues, including regional architecture reform and a proposed Declaration for the Pacific to remain an Ocean of Peace, would demand bold decisions from leaders.

“This year’s theme challenges us to move from vision to implementation – to go beyond rhetoric and deliver on the promises we have made to our people,” Nayasi said.

The deputy secretary general commended Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele for Solomon Islands’ efforts on the regional and global stage.

“Under your leadership, Solomon Islands continues to play an influential role in advancing the Pacific’s interests – not only within our region but also on the global stage,” Nayasi said.

“Whether on climate change, security or efforts to strengthen multilateralism, your principled voice and strategic diplomacy have helped to steer our collective agenda forward.”

He also emphasised the importance of Pacific cultural values like kastom and the wantok system in shaping regional cooperation.

“The values embodied in Solomon Islands kastom and the wantok system – of kinship, reciprocity and shared responsibility – are the very values that underpin the Pacific Way and our vision for a stronger, more integrated region,” he said.

The Forum Secretariat pledged full support to Solomon Islands during its term as Forum Chair.

“We are committed to ensuring a successful 54th Forum and to working alongside your government to advance our regional priorities in ways that are inclusive, coordinated, and people-centred,” Nayasi said.

“Iumi Tugeda – together, we will act now for an integrated, peaceful, and resilient Blue Pacific,” said Nayasi.
