The Marshall Islands and Palau have signed the MOU for the U.S Tuna Treaty to apply the 2024 amendments to the Treaty on Fisheries between Pacific Island States and the U.S pending ratification of such amendments by all the Parties.
Anthony M. Muller, Minister for Natural Resources and Commerce of the Marshall Islands, and Steven Victor, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment of Palau, signed the MOU on Friday.
The signing took place on the margin of the WCPFC21 sessions currently underway in Suva, Fiji.
Forum Fisheries Committee (FFC) Chair Erana Aliklik welcomed the Ministers and expressed, on behalf of the Pacific Island Parties, gratitude for the commitment of both Parties to implement the amendments to the Treaty.
The Chair highlighted the ongoing partnership on fisheries development between the Parties under the Treaty.
“Today, marks another important milestone in the implementation of the Treaty on fisheries between the Governments of the Pacific Island States and the Government of the United States of America,” Aliklik acknowledged.
The 2024 amendments to the U. S Tuna Treaty provide for access arrangements to the fisheries zones of the Pacific Islands Parties over five years.
