Fiji’s Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has been elected the country’s next President in a special parliamentary session in Suva today, securing 37 votes to claim the position.
Ratu Naiqama, nominated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, emerged victorious over opposition candidate Ratu Meli Natalatu Tora Taivaiqia, who received 16 votes.
“Pursuant to section 84 of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji, I hereby nominate Ratu Naiqama Tawake Colati Lalabalavu to be appointed as President of the Republic of Fiji,” said PM Rabuka during the session.
Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu countered with his own nomination, putting forward Ratu Meli Tora Taivaiqia as their choice for the presidency.
With both nominations submitted, Acting Speaker Lenora Qereqeretabua conducted a roll-call vote, which saw Ratu Naiqama secure the majority needed to become President-elect.
“The Prime Minister’s nominee, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, received 37 votes, while the Opposition’s nominee, Ratu Meli Tora Taivaiqia, received 16 votes,” announced Qereqeretabua.
Declaring the results, she added, “Pursuant to section 84(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji and Standing Order 136(6), I now declare Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, having received the votes of more than half of all Members present, appointed as the President of the Republic of Fiji.”
On behalf of Parliament, Qereqeretabua extended congratulations to Ratu Naiqama on his new role as President-elect.
