Pacific Islands Forum Chair and Tongan Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni opened a crucial meeting with New Caledonia’s Customary Senate, calling for peaceful resolutions to escalating tensions in the French territory.

“The situation in New Caledonia is a top priority for us,” Sovaleni said, before customary leaders and emphasising the significance of cultural ties in resolving the crisis.

“We are here to support efforts for peace, the de-escalation of ongoing violence, and to promote dialogue between the parties,” he added.

Sovaleni is leading a Forum mission to New Caledonia at the invitation of both the New Caledonian government and the French state.

Over three days, the delegation will meet with local leaders, officials, and customary authorities to understand the political unrest and the role of indigenous customs in restoring stability.

“This meeting will be critical to informing our observations,” Sovaleni said. “As a distinctly Pacific mission, we fully appreciate the importance of culture, custom, and tradition in our societies.”

Sovaleni urged the Customary Senate to share its perspectives on the crisis and insights on how customary processes could support peace efforts.

“We are eager to hear your perspectives on the crisis that has unfolded this year; the role customary processes and tradition may play in bringing peace to New Caledonia; and indeed, your role in the political process moving forward,” he said.

At the end of the mission, Sovaleni and his delegation will provide recommendations to address the crisis, informed by the dialogue with New Caledonian leaders and communities.

“Our time is short, and we have a lot to learn from you,” he concluded, acknowledging the urgency of the visit and the region’s hope for a peaceful way forward in New Caledonia.

“At the conclusion of our mission, we will also provide our perspectives and recommendations, that will be informed by the various discussions we will have over the coming days,” said Sovaleni.
