Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne has expressed confidence in his squad’s defensive capabilities as they prepare to face the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup semifinal.

Reflecting on their performance against Tonga, where they prevented any second-half points, Byrne commended the team’s resilience and fitness.

He believes these factors have been instrumental in their ability to maintain pressure and close out matches effectively.

“Our fitness is something that’s been very pleasing for us. The ability to play late into the game and also under pressure, being able to continually get around the corner and put pressure on.”

Byrne also noted that the squad is focusing on improving their defensive structure, ensuring they maintain a cohesive approach to put pressure on their opponents as a unit.

Fiji will face USA at 10.05 pm this Saturday.

Meanwhile, Fijian Drua forward Vilive Miramira is using his omission from the Flying Fijians squad in the recent Pacific Nations Cup as fuel for improvement, with the November tests just around the corner.

Miramira, who has been a standout performer for the Drua, admitted that missing out on national selection has motivated him to push harder and correct his on-field mistakes.

He said that he is working on his game and trying to be better.

“I’ve been reviewing my game for this year. When I got dropped, it gave me more motivation to work on my mistakes. It’s just built from there.”

The 25-year-old forward remains optimistic about his chances of making it into the squad for the upcoming November international tests.

Despite the setback, Miramira has maintained a positive mindset, focusing on his training and refining his skills.
