Australia has increased its investments in maritime initiatives in Pacific Island countries.
Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong during the Pacific Islands (PIF) Foreign Ministers Meeting in Fiji Friday announced that Australia will invest around AUD$18.5 million (US$12.15 million) towards the construction of a Pacific-owned oceans and fisheries research vessel.
Minister Wong announced that this is a top priority for the Pacific region and is supported by Partners in the Blue Pacific.
The vessel will collect vital scientific information to sustainably manage ocean resources and monitor climate change impacts.
Australia increased in maritime initiatives also accounts for investment of AUD18.5 million to enhance Pacific-led fisheries surveillance and enforcement.
This support will be delivered through the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) as part of Australia’ commitment to the Quad Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness.
Wong stated that this investment will improve the region’s ability to detect illegal activity within maritime zones through provision of satellite data, training and capacity building.
