Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida Fumio received a courtesy call Tuesday from Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Baron Waqa who is visiting Japan to participate in the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10).
Prime Minister Kishida expressed his desire, with Secretary General Waqa’s cooperation, to strengthen the “kizuna” (bond) between Japan and the Pacific Island countries at PALM10.
He emphasised the importance of discussing cooperation aligned with the “2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent” and using the meeting to communicate their joint direction both domestically and internationally.
Prime Minister Kishida voiced strong support for regional unity and the role of the PIF Secretariat.
He mentioned that Japan would leverage its knowledge and experience to support the “2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent” and implement projects promoting trade, investment, and tourism between Japan and the Pacific Island countries through the Pacific Island Centre (PIC) in Tokyo.
Secretary General Waqa expressed his hope for a successful PALM10, gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for their cooperation, and his anticipation of enhanced cooperation with Japan.
Regarding the discharge of ALPS-treated water into the sea, Prime Minister Kishida assured continued efforts to ensure safety.
