Japan Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has announced the Asian nation’s commitment to provide a fishery research vessel to Papua New Guinea during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister James Marape on Tuesday.
He also expressed gratitude for Papua New Guinea’s support in ensuring stable access for Japanese fishing vessels and conveyed Japan’s decision to supply additional fishery equipment.
Both leaders welcomed progress in defense cooperation, with Prime Minister Marape expressing hope for a successful PALM 10 and gratitude for Japan’s cooperation.
He anticipated enhanced bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Prime Minister Kishida also extended condolences for victims of the recent landslide disaster in Papua New Guinea and expressed a desire to strengthen bilateral relations toward the upcoming 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Papua New Guinea.
At PALM 10, Prime Minister Kishida reiterated his aim, with Prime Minister Marape’s cooperation, to deepen the “kizuna” (bond) between Japan and Pacific Island countries.
He highlighted discussions aligned with the “2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent” to shape the direction for Japan-Pacific Island cooperation on both domestic and international fronts.
The leaders also discussed concerns about ALPS treated water.
Prime Minister Kishida assured ongoing safety efforts, which Prime Minister Marape acknowledged positively. They also exchanged candid views on various regional issues.
