Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida Fumio Tuesday welcomed the opening of Niue’s first honorary consulate in Japan, aiming to bolster bilateral ties as he met with Niue Premier Dalton Tagelagi during the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10).

During their bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Kishida announced Japan’s commitment to providing disaster prevention and response equipment to Niue, including police vehicles and radios.

He expressed strong support for Niue in tackling its challenges.

Premier Tagelagi expressed optimism for a successful PALM10 and gratitude for Japan’s cooperation, anticipating enhanced bilateral cooperation.

Prime Minister Kishida highlighted at PALM10 his aim, alongside Premier Tagelagi, to strengthen the “kizuna” between Japan and Pacific Island countries.

He emphasised discussing cooperation aligned with the “2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent” and using the meeting to communicate their joint direction domestically and internationally.

Addressing concerns about ALPS treated water discharge into the sea, Prime Minister Kishida assured ongoing safety efforts, which Premier Tagelagi welcomed warmly.

The leaders also discussed various regional issues, exchanging views to advance mutual interests and regional stability.
