Forum Chair and Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown expressed the significance of the 10th PALM during the welcome reception hosted by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi in Japan.
“This 10th PALM is a celebration of our shared values and determined efforts through genuine partnerships to better support our separate and shared aspirations for a resilient region of peace, harmony, security, social inclusion, and prosperity.”
Reflecting on the history of PALM since its inception in 1997, Brown highlighted its role in shaping the Forum’s engagement with Dialogue Partners and expanding relations beyond the Pacific.
“Our PALM partnership has been a cornerstone of cooperation, marked by leader-led articulation of areas for cooperation and a steadfast commitment to peace and security within the Blue Pacific Continent. As we look back on nearly three decades, there is much to be proud of and draw inspiration from, but more remains to be done.”
Acknowledging Japan’s commitment to the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, Brown reaffirmed the Forum’s dedication to strengthening “Kizuna” ties.
“In that regard, we welcome Japan’s abiding commitment to support our endeavours as articulated in the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, and we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening our Kizuna ties.”
Expressing gratitude for the gathering of old friends, new acquaintances, and representatives from Japanese entities partnering with Pacific communities, Brown emphasised collaboration towards shared aspirations.
“I’m delighted to see among us tonight old friends and new, and representatives from the various Japanese entities already partnering with our people of the Pacific. Thank you for your contributions, and we look forward to working with you in the coming months to bring our shared aspirations to fruition.”
Brown also referencing Japan Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashin’s visit to the Cook Islands during the Pacific Islands Forum last year and its ongoing commitment to the region.
“Your visit to the Cook Islands last year was most welcome and affirmation of Japan’s ongoing commitment to our region. As we look to the Kingdom of Tonga hosting our 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting next month, we once more look to Japan’s leadership in high-level representation.”
The evening concluded with anticipation for the PALM Leaders Summit, aiming to inspire and empower future efforts.
“We thank you for hosting us for this welcome reception and look forward to this week’s programme. In particular, we look forward to our PALM Leaders Summit on Thursday – may it serve to inspire and empower our forward efforts, striding forward together,” said PM Brown.
