Feleti Teo secured the position of Tuvalu’ new Prime Minister without facing any opposition Monday.
He was elected to the Parliament of Tuvalu after the 2024 general election in January.
Tuvalu MP Simon Kofe took to Twitter to announce the unprecedented development, expressing congratulations to Feleti Teo.
Kofe highlighted that it marked the first instance in Tuvalu’s history where a Prime Minister had been nominated unopposed.
“Congratulations to Hon. Feleti Teo, who was elected unopposed as Tuvalu’s new Prime Minister this morning. It is the first time in our history that a Prime Minister has been nominated unopposed. The inauguration of the PM and Cabinet Ministers will take place this week,” said Kofe.
Feleti Teo, with an extensive background, had previously served as the executive director of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). His experience also included a stint as the Deputy Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) from 2007 to 2013, with the headquarters based in Fiji.
Teo’s involvement in Tuvalu’s governance wasn’t new, as he had previously held the position of Attorney General from 1991 to 2000. Additionally, he served as the Director General of the Forum Fishery Agency from 2000 to 2006. With a rich history in various roles, Teo’s election brought a unique chapter to Tuvalu’s political landscape.
