The Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Henry Puna has launched a fundraising appeal to help Tonga’s recovery from the 15 January eruption and tsunami.
Basic communications and transport links have only recently been established since the underwater eruption of the Hunga-Tonga, Hunga-Ha’apai volcano caused shockwaves and a tsunami rippled worldwide.
“Our hearts go out to those in Tonga and the people of Tonga around the world who have been trying to find out more news of their loved ones and communities. I send condolences to those grieving, the displaced communities, and the many who are rebuilding their lives and homes. Forum nations have been quick to respond and provide confirmation of being ready to step in to assist, where required, when the time comes,” said Secretary General Puna.
“It’s with that in mind, and the extent of the damages we have seen to date, that we have launched the Blue Pacific Tonga Appeal, to help mobilise financial support for Tonga’s recovery efforts.”
Information to date has shown the current focus is around delivery of disaster relief supplies (water, medication, shelter, food, disaster kits) to communities affected, with Australia and New Zealand leading reconnoitring missions to the area.
“Many partners and other international organizations have all pledged assistance to Tonga, and the communications challenges in coordination of the response efforts are significant—the Forum will be guided by and continues to be part of the meetings of the UNOCHA, as the coordination mechanism progressing this work,” said SG Puna.
