10:34 pm GMT+12, 17/04/2017, American Samoa

The 2017 Flag Day ceremony, under the theme, “Tupulaga Mo a Taeao (or Youth for Tomorrow)”, took place in American Samoa this morning at Veteran Memorial Stadium in Tafuna.

In his Flag Day proclamation, Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga said the people have always believed that through the success of children, the future of the people of American Samoa and the culture will be assured.

Over the last several years, the governor said many investments have been made in the future of the territory's youth, including creation of the Department of Youth and Women's Affairs, the building of the Pago Pago Community Youth Center, the Summer Youth Employment Program, the Adopt a School Programme, the Boys and Girls Club of American Samoa, and the Governor's College Apprenticeship Programme.

Dignitaries listed in this year's Flag Day programme are Samoa Head of State, Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, Samoa Prime Minster Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, and US Interior Department Acting Assistant Secretary Nikolao Pula.

The ceremony marks the 117 years since American Samoa became a US territory.
