Solomon Islands needs women in Parliament and hopefully we’ll see some of them up there in the upcoming elections this year.

These were the words of Sarah Dyer, Women in Leadership Desk officer of the National Council of Women

Ms Dyer said there are already a few women who are showing interest to contest in the upcoming elections.
“Some of them contested in previous elections while some will be their first time,”Ms Dyer said.

She said women are already making preparation for the election.

“These women know the issues affecting local women so if they get in there, they’ll contribute meaningfully during debate,”Ms Dyer said.

She said one of the things the women are still waiting for is whether the number of constituencies will increase.

The Constituency Boundaries Commission has recommended 16 new constituencies.

“I do really hope that women will get a seat in parliament.

“We are also waiting for the outcome of the proposed Political Party Bill. Once this is passed in the next sitting of parliament, women will be able to join any parties of their choice.”

Ms Dyer also expressed concern about the use of large amounts of money by candidates to lure voters.
“Money has been part of the national elections in Solomon Islands and already but we have to change or put a stop to this practise.

“Because if we don’t, we will never change.

“People need to choose leaders including women who will make good decision for the country to be in power and not leaders who lure people with money,” she said.

Ms Dyer encourages voters to think carefully before casting their votes because the country belongs to every citizen.

The Women in Leadership Desk office at the National Council of Women was established in 2005 to support women interested in taking up the leadership roles
